Hair Loss Drug Treament
The treatment of permanent hereditary hair loss with medications, either taken orally or applied like tonics on the balding scalp, has long been the dream of people suffering from this type of hair loss. A miracle cure is what every one has been hoping for centuries. Until recently this hope has been nothing but a dream. Signs that this dream was now closer to being realized emerged with reports in the early eighties that the drug Minoxidil was scientifically proven to have some benefit in counteracting hereditary hair loss. A few years later the Food and Drug Administration approved the sale of minoxidil for the purpose of fighting hereditary hair loss. This discovery led to the marketing of minoxidil by the Upjohn company as Rogaine and also led to increased interest in finding other medical drug treatments that would be even more effective than minoxidil. This increased research led to the discovery that other drugs and combinations of drugs are also effective in counteracting hereditary hair loss. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration approved the drug finasteride for treatment of hereditary hair loss, which is now being marketed by Merck under the trade name Propecia. Many other drugs and combinations of drugs are now being tested, although they have yet to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Some of these promising medical drug treatments may be available in the coming few years.
